Order of Ceremonies

The ceremonies will last approximately one hour and three quarters. The length of each ceremony will depend on the number of students graduating and may be a little longer for the larger departments.

Each ceremony adheres to the following standard outline:

  • as members of the audience are seated, a programme of organ music is played by Portsmouth Cathedral's organist
  • the University procession signals the start of the ceremony
  • the Chancellor opens the Congregation
  • the Vice-Chancellor, or a Pro Vice-Chancellor, addresses the congregation
  • the Academic Registrar confirms the awards
  • the Chancellor admits the students to their degrees
  • the Chancellor and Dean receive successful candidates – please see below as to the procedure for being admitted to the degree
  • the Chancellor concludes the ceremony
  • the University procession leaves the Guildhall followed by the procession of diplomats and graduates
