Entry Requirements

We are happy to consider overseas applications on a case by case basis. As a general guide:

Baccalaureate (Diplôme), A Levels or the International Baccalaureate are accepted for Year 1 entry onto our undergraduate programmes. Depending on the chosen course, students generally need to achieve a score of 12 or higher in Baccalaureate out of a total score of 20.

Students with a good Brevet de Technicien/Supérieur (BTS) or other Diplôme/High National Diploma (HND) can be considered for advanced entry onto a relevant undergraduate programme.

A Bachelor’s degree is required for entry onto a postgraduate programme. We would consider a score in the range of bien/assez bien, depending on the chosen course. Work experience is also required for several other postgraduate courses and many courses will require you to have studied relevant subjects. Please visit Courses and go to the specific page for the course you are interested in for more details.

Students holding a good Master’s Degree will be considered for PhD study upon submission of a research proposal. Please visit our Graduate School pages for information on specific areas of research.

English Language requirements:

We accept IELTS, TOEFL, IGCSE and several other certificates. The required score will depend on your level of entry and your chosen course. Please visit English language requirements for more details. We offer Pre-sessional English language programmes for applicants who do not yet meet the required English level for entry onto our degree courses.

The British Council France provides many opportunities throughout the year for students to take an IELTS test in several cities. Please visit their website for more details at

Our International Officers travel to France regularly for Education Fairs, visits to agents and other events. These are great opportunities to speak to us about applying to study at the University of Portsmouth and it would be great to meet you there!

See our upcoming events below, or check our events page for full listings.

French/Indian Student Experience

"This seafront city with a lot of historical significance is also the best place to study. The university buildings are spread around the city centre, all in a 10-minute radius.

Shops, sports facilities and convenience stores are all very close to all the halls of accommodations and university buildings. Halls are a great place to live during the course of your university life. You get to meet a lot of different people and cultures.

My course gives me a lot of experience in the laboratories and also in the field. I have the opportunity to take part in research conducted by the psychology and sports science departments which helps me gain experience. The university helps your learning in a very holistic way."
