Entry Requirements

We are happy to consider overseas applications on a case by case basis. As a general guide:

You will require a foundation year if you hold KCSE only as this is not sufficient for entry onto our undergraduate programmes. We recommend students take a foundation programme at our partner college, International College Portsmouth (ICP)

To be considered for an undergraduate programme, you should hold the following:

Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE - 5 credits including Mathematics and English language) or the East African Certificate of Education (EACE) or Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE)

Minimum of 3 subjects directly comparable to entry requirements of standard 'A'Levels in:

  • Cambridge Overseas Higher School Certificate (COHSC)
  • East African Advanced Certificate of Education (EAACE)
  • or Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) awarded until 1989

Minimum of 'C' credit overall in:

  • Diploma / Ordinary Diploma / Ordinary Technician Diploma
  • University Diploma / Diploma

A-Levels and the International Baccalaureate are also accepted. Students with satisfactory academic performance at Ordinary National Diploma (OND) will be considered for relevant undergraduate programmes.

Students with a good Higher National Diploma (HND) or a Higher Technician Diploma may be considered for advanced entry onto a relevant undergraduate degree programme. Students with a Third Class or Ordinary degree may be considered for final year (top-up) entry onto a degree programme in a relevant subject (subject to university policy).

Advanced Diplomas from APTECH/ABE/ICM and Informatics

If you have completed ADSE (APTECH) with credit or achieve GPA of 2.0 (Informatics), you can be considered for final year (top-up) entry onto the following courses:

  • BSc (Hons) Computing
  • BSc (Hons) Computing and Digital Image
  • BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems
  • BSc (Hons) Web Technologies
  • BSc (Hons) Computing and Society
  • BEng (Hons) Computer Networks
  • BSc (Hons) Computing and Information Systems (Distance Learning)
  • BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems (Distance Learning)
  • If you achieved a minimum GPA of 3.5 or above at ADSE, you can be considered for final year (top up) entry onto the following courses:
  • BSc (Hons) Computer Science
  • BSc (Hons) Software Engineering
  • BSc (Hons) Forensic Computing

Please note: details transcripts must be provided

For entry onto our Masters programmes, we will consider your average GPA from your Bachelors degree, depending on whether it is out of 4 or 5, although each application is considered individually.

Students with a lower GPA will require a Pre-Masters course, delivered by our partner college on campus, International College Portsmouth (ICP).

For entry onto our MBA International, students will also need at least 3 years relevant work experience after graduation in a managerial or supervisory capacity. Work experience is also required for several other postgraduate courses and many courses will require you to have studied relevant subjects. Please see our courses for more details.

Students holding a good Masters Degree will be considered for PhD study upon submission of a research proposal. Please visit our Graduate School pages for information on specific areas of research.

English Language requirements

Kenya students who hold English grade C in the following certificates are accepted in lieu of IELTS

  • East African Certificate of Education (EACE)
  • Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE)
  • Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE)
  • Cambridge Overseas School Certificate (COSC)

If there is no evidence of the above, you will need to take an IELTS test or equivalent. We also accept IGCSE and several other certificates. The required score will depend on your level of entry and your chosen course. Please visit English language requirements for more details. We offer Pre-sessional English language programmes for applicants who do not yet meet the required English level for entry onto our degree courses.

Our International Officers travel to Kenya regularly for Education Fairs, visits to agents and other events. These are great opportunities to speak to us about applying to study at the University of Portsmouth and it would be great to meet you there!

See our upcoming events below, or check our events page for full listings.

International Alumni Referral Awards

We know that the best promotion is 'word of mouth'. We also know that if students have a good experience at Portsmouth, they will tell their friends, family and colleagues - and sometimes, as a result, one of those people decides to come and study at the University of Portsmouth. We want to formally recognise this assistance in recommending that person to the University of Portsmouth.

The International Alumni Referral Award (IARA) scheme is for current and former University of Portsmouth students who refer an applicant to study here. We reward the current/former student with £400 if their application results in a registration.

How does the scheme work?

Please use the following form:

Please download and complete the International Alumni Referral Award Form above. You must ensure that the International Alumni Referral Award Form is attached to the online application when it is submitted. When you are submitting the online application, please select IARA from the agent drop-down menu and attach a copy of the completed IARA Form with the 'Supported Documents Area'.

Please note: we cannot link the application to you after we have received the application and it has been input into the University's Admissions System.

If you have any questions about this scheme, please email us.

Kenyan Student Experience

"Being a student at the University of Portsmouth has been a great and wonderful experience for me. I have had tremendous support throughout my time here which has made my Portsmouth experience enjoyable.

I love the fact that Portsmouth is a sea-side city, this encapsulates a variety of experiences.  I personally love the sea and this was one of the driving factors as to why I chose to come and study at Portsmouth."
