We have a large and vibrant African community, with 100 new students joining us from all over Nigeria to study at undergraduate and postgraduate level in 2016.  The Afro-Caribbean Society runs a broad range of events and activities throughout the year.

Entry Requirements

This information is for general guidance only as entry requirements may vary for different courses.

For more specific details, please visit the relevant course web page or contact the admissions office for your chosen subject area.

International Foundation Year

We accept 5 WAEC/NECO subjects (including mathematics and English language) with minimum grades of 1-6 or A-D in relevant subjects.

Students who have not achieved the A-level requirements for their chosen course are directed to the International Foundation Year, delivered by our partner, ICP-Navitas

Undergraduate

To be considered for an undergraduate degree, you will have completed A-Levels, International Baccalaureate or a Foundation Year.  For specific grades required, please refer to the course page.

Advanced Diplomas from APTECH/NCC and Informatics

If you have completed ADSE (APTECH) with credit or achieved GPA of 2.0 (NCC/Informatics), you can be considered for final year (top-up) entry onto the following courses:

  • BSc (Hons) Computing
  • BSc (Hons) Computing and Digital Image
  • BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems
  • BSc (Hons) Web Technologies
  • BSc (Hons) Computing and Society
  • BEng (Hons) Computer Networks
  • BSc (Hons) Computing and Information Systems (Distance Learning)
  • BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems (Distance Learning)

If you achieved a minimum GPA of 3.5 or above at ADSE, you can be considered for final year (top-up) entry onto the following courses:

  • BSc (Hons) Computer Science
  • BSc (Hons) Software Engineering
  • BSc (Hons) Forensic Computing

Postgraduate Taught

To be considered for a postgraduate degree, you should hold a Bachelor’s degree awarded by a recognised Nigerian university or an equivalent professional qualification approved by the University of Portsmouth:

  • UK 2.1 equivalent: 65%, or GPA 2.75/4.0
  • UK 2.2 equivalent: 55% or GPA 2.50/4.0

Please note, some courses require a higher overall CGPA. We are happy to consider applications with a slightly lower GPA on a case by case basis.

Work experience is required for some postgraduate courses and many courses will require you to have studied relevant subjects. Please see our full course list for more details. 

Postgraduate Research

Students holding a good Master’s Degree will be considered for PhD study upon submission of a strong research proposal. Please visit our Graduate School pages for information on specific areas of research. 

English Language requirements 

Nigerian students who hold a minimum credit pass (C6) at SSCE (WAEC/NECO/iGCSE English) are exempt from Standard English tests.  If there is no evidence of SSCE, you will need to take one of the recognised English language qualifications. The required score will depend on which test is taken, your level of entry and your chosen course.  

We will also accept an official letter from your University, ascertaining that you have been taught in English for a minimum of two years.

We accept IELTS, IGCSE, O Level, Cambridge Advanced Examination, Anglia Examination Syndicate. Please visit English language requirements for more details. We offer Pre-Sessional English language programmes for applicants who do not yet meet the required English level for entry onto our degree courses.

You will need to be able to demonstrate the required level of English language proficiency to study at the University of Portsmouth.  Please ensure that transcripts (e.g. WAEC, iGCSE) are submitted with your application.  

SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES

GOAL Award

All self-funding students from Nigeria will be eligible for the Global Outreach: Access to Learning (GOAL) Award.

The award is a 10% fee reduction for self-funded international students for the first year of study only. It applies to all degree courses with fees of £12,000 and above for 2016 entry and £12,600 or above for 2017 entry.

The GOAL Awards are for students who are nationals of middle and low-income countries, as defined principally by the United Nations Human Development Index. The list of eligible countries can be found here.

 

School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Scholarship 

A number of scholarships are available in our Faculty of Science. They take the form of a 20% fee reduction for the following full-time postgraduate courses:

  • MSc Engineering Geology
  • MSc Geological and Environmental Hazards
  • MSc Contaminated Land
  • MSc Crisis and Disaster Management
  • MSc Geographical Information Systems
  • MSc Coastal and Marine Resource Management

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

  • have achieved a GPA of 3.0 / 5 or 2:2
  • be self-financing

This scholarship is only open to Ghanaian or Nigerian students.

Students will automatically be considered for this scholarship - no application needed but the overall quality of the application is considered including Personal Statement and References.

To be considered for the SEES Scholarship, applications should be submitted by 23 February 2018, and all conditions (including deposit) fulfilled by 30 May 2018.

These bursaries and scholarships cannot be combined with any other University discount or scholarship scheme, except the 2% 'early payment discount'. Eligible applicants for the GOAL Award will be awarded automatically. The discounted fee will be stated on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Study (CAS).

International Alumni Referral Awards

We know that the best promotion is 'word of mouth'. We also know that if students have a good experience at Portsmouth, they will tell their friends, family and colleagues - and sometimes, as a result, one of those people decides to come and study at the University of Portsmouth. We want to formally recognise this assistance in recommending that person to the University of Portsmouth.

The International Alumni Referral Award (IARA) scheme is for current and former University of Portsmouth students who refer an applicant to study here. We reward the current/former student with £400 if their application results in a registration.

How does the scheme work?

You must ensure that the International Alumni Referral Award Form is attached to the on-line application when it is submitted. When you are submitting the online application, please select IARA from the agent drop-down menu and attach a copy of the completed IARA Form with the 'Supported Documents Area'.

Please note: we cannot link the application to you after we have received the application and it has been input into the University's Admissions System.
