Collection Management and Access Policy

Executive Summary

The University Library aims to provide access to a wide range of information, regardless of format, to support the academic programme of the University.

This policy provides guidelines for the systematic maintenance, management and development of these collections of information resources, which is undertaken by Library staff working in partnership with Faculty staff.

The Library aims to facilitate access to essential reading materials as well as selecting resources to encourage wider reading in areas of academic study. Such resources will include databases to enable customers to locate journal articles, reports and conference proceedings.

Access to resources not held in the University Library is provided through the interlibrary loan service and national access arrangements.

By providing access to information through a range of holdings, electronic access, interlibrary loans and national access arrangements, the University Library aims to provide convenient access to information for all staff and students.

The University of Portsmouth is committed to promoting and maintaining excellence in learning, teaching, research and scholarship across a broad range of disciplines. In line with this , the University Library aims to provide access to a wide range of information regardless of format. Demonstrating value for money and forward financial planning are primary concerns as the Library endeavours to reflect the priorities of the University as expressed in the Strategic Plan and other supporting strategies.

This document provides guidelines for the systematic maintenance, management and development of collections of information resources in the University Library and refers to ways of accessing resources which it does not hold. It is intended both as a statement of policy for reference by library users and as guidance on working practice for library staff. It provides general guidelines for access to information and collections and for the selection, maintenance, development and revision of stock.
