Andy Barrow

I was born in York in 1948, entering the world just a few yards from the house in which Guy Fawkes (of 'Gunpowder Plot' fame) was born.  I attended Pocklington School in Pocklington, East Yorkshire, a town which claims to be the last place in England to burn a witch.  The parish register for 1630 records "Old Wife Green burnt in Market for a witch".  You didn't mess with the Parish Council in the 1630's did you?  I studied Zoology at Newcastle University, later studying Librarianship at Bradford Technical College and Library and Information Services Management at the University of Wales at Aberystwyth.  In 1999 I aquired a Diploma in Information Systems, and in 2007 a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, both from the University of Portsmouth. I have worked in libraries since 1973, my career encompassing the national library (British Library), a water industry library (Anglian Water Authority) and four university libraries (University of BathArabian Gulf UniversityAmerican University in Bulgaria and Portsmouth Polytechnic / University of Portsmouth).

Where to find me

From 09.00-17.00 I can be found in my office (Room 0.23) on the Ground Floor of the University Library.  I share an office with my colleague Sue Stevenson, who is Assistant Faculty Librarian for Science and Technology.  Sue helps me and the Faculty Librarian for Technology, Timothy Collinson.  Sue and I share a phone - 3236 from on campus, +44 (0)23 9284 3236 from off-campus.

How can we help you?

When you're new to the University Sue or I will provide you with a basic library induction session, arranged by your department.  Once your course is properly under way we provide more advanced sessions on literature searching (which teaches you how to find journal articles using journal article databases) and on how to cite references correctly. These advanced sessions, which teach you the skills required for finding quality academic information, are usually delivered later in the course, but they really need to be delivered as early in the course as possible, and Sue and I will try to see that this happens. The sessions take the form of a brief introduction to the scientific literature and to the principles of searching for journal articles.  After the theory practical literature searching is demonstrated (ideally with 'hands on' involvement on your part) using journal article databases appropriate to the subject. Advanced searching topics covered include: database selection, simple searching, advanced searching using Boolean logic, field-specific searching and the use of wildcards. These sessions are supported by handouts and workbooks, including a guides to citing references in Harvard format - APA style or Vancouver format as appropriate.

Reference management using EndNote and EndNote Web

There is now an easy-to-use reference management package on the Web, EndNote Web.  EndNote Web is ideally suited to undergraduate use, particularly for final year students producing their dissertations. You can download a locally-produced guide to using EndNote Web below. You can also find nationally-produced information at MIMAS Quick Guide to EndNote Web. EndNote Web is best accessed via the My EndNote Web link in the Web of Knowledge.  If you access EndNote Web through the Web of Knowledge its behaviour is more consistent than if you go directly to the EndNote Web website.

As of September 2009 the University networks EndNote X3 to the desktops of all University computers. More powerful than EndNote Web it can exchange references with the Web-based version, thus enabling users to work with their references both on-campus or off-campus. A guide to using EndNote X3 can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of this page.  Note that while EndNote can be installed free-of-charge on any University-owned computers that are taken off-campus, it cannot be installed on non-University owned computers.  Users wanting a copy of EndNote on their own computers can buy a discounted copy of the software from the United Kingdom vendors, Adept Scientific PLCImportant note: Support for discounted copies of EndNote is supplied by the University of Portsmouth, not by Adept Scientific.
