Obtaining Permission to Use Copyright Material
Permission to use copyrighted material must be gained from the copyright holder. The copyright holder is usually:
- author, or
- publisher/production company, or
- director, or
- composer of the work, or
- the employer of the above
If in doubt, refer to the publisher/production company.
In order to apply for permission directly from the publisher, you will need to know the following information:
full title of the work
author/editor/director, etc
publisher (or production company)
year of publication/release of original material
the way in which the material is to be used
the number of copies of your publication to be produced
additionally, in the case of print materials:
- copy of the original complete with figure/page reference
- ISBN/ISSN number
Based on the above information the copyright holder will decide whether to grant permission and how much to charge.
In the case of material which must be cleared through CLARCS (Copyright Licensing Agency Rapid Clearance Service) you will need to supply:
- title of the material to be used
- publisher of the material
- ISBN or ISSN of the publication
- number of SIDES to be copied
- number of copies to be distributed
- name of the course
It is essential that all of this information is provided in order that clearances can be dealt with quickly.
