EndNote and EndNote Web

Desktop EndNote

Are you tired of struggling to manage that collection of references that's accumulating in your office? Well, you can stop struggling now and use your computer to help you manage them. How? By using the reference management software that the University networks, EndNote (currently EndNote X3).  EndNote is a powerful reference management package of long standing, using which you can create databases of bibliographic references.  These libraries can be populated with references in a variety of ways ranging from simply typing in the references to, if it exists, utilising a bibliographic database's direct export function, which near-seamlessly transmits references from the database into the EndNote library of your choice.  Is writing up getting near? EndNote has a powerful Cite While You Write facility which links your libraries of references to a journal article, essay or dissertation in MS Word, enabling you to generate that document's bibliography in a huge range of citation styles including Vancouver format and Harvard format - APA style.  You can download PDF copies of the guides to EndNote Web and EndNote X4.  If you are using EndNote X2 (never networked here) use the guide to EndNote X4.

Purchasing copies of EndNote for personal use

The University's site licence for EndNote does not include the free provision of EndNote for individuals' personal computers.  If you wish to purchase a (heaviliy-discounted) copy of EndNote for your own use you will need to login to the supplier's Shibboleth-authenticated educational webstore.  Current EndNote costs (May 2012) are as follows:  a software download costs £66.00 a  CD of the sofware costs £69.44 and a CD and Getting Started Guide costs £80.68  These prices include VAT at the prevailing rate and, where applicable, the cost of delivery.

Support for personal copies of EndNote

Please note that discounted copies of EndNote do not qualify for support from the vendors, Adept Scientific.  If you experience problems using the software you will need to seek help from the Information Services Service Desk (Ext.7777)

EndNote Web

In late 2006 the makers of EndNote released a simplified Web-based version of the software, EndNote Web, which is ideal for use by undergraduates and students on taught master's degree courses.  EndNote Web also circumvents the problem of accessing EndNote from off-campus.  Usefully EndNote X3 and EndNote Web can exchange references, so you can work with your references in EndNote Web off-campus, moving the references down into desktop EndNote when you are back on-campus. The current veersion of EndNote Web is 3.3.

Customising EndNote and EndNote Web

It is possible to customise desktop EndNote so that, for example, it will output references in the house style of a particular journal.  Customisation is not particularly easy, but if you would like advice on, or help with, customising desktop EndNote please contact the Information Services Service Desk (Ext.7777). The opportunities for customising EndNote Web are much more limited, but new reference output styles can be added to the list of output styles that are available to University of Portsmouth users.
