Staff Development Workshops
Supporting E-Learning and Research
Staff Development Workshops are aimed at staff and researchers. Support staff and students as well as academic staff are welcome to attend. Workshops are held in the University Library seminar rooms. Each workshop normally runs for 2 hours unless otherwise advertised. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. We offer tailored sessions if you cannot attend the advertised workshop. We also run a series of Library Workshops aimed at students, but staff are welcome to attend these as well.

Diving into the Deep Web: beyond the reaches of Google

The ‘deep’ or ‘invisible’ web comprises all the information available on the web that is not found by using search engines such as Google or Ask.com. This includes content in databases such as those provided by the Library, sites requiring a login e.g. Moodle, interactive content such as those that require forms to be filled out and information added too recently for search engines to find. Come along and discover this hidden world for yourself.
How to manage your references with EndNote Web

Learn how to manage references for your academic work using EndNote Web, a free Web-based reference management package. Learn how to collect references by typing and searching remote databases. Learn how to link a collection of references to a Word document, so that EndNote Web will be able to generate that document's bibliography, formatted correctly, in Harvard format - APA style or in Vancouver format.
How to use Zotero and other Web based reference management tools

Zotero and Mendeley are free reference management tools which combine the features of journal article search engines with the features of reference management software such as EndNote Web. This session introduces these two tools with an opportunity for a hands-on trial to see which you like best!
Dark side of the Web: a look at the problems and dangers of the online world

Worried about students’ online activity? As the importance of “electronic footprints” grows, we need to be aware of the problems and dangers inherent in both traditional and newer Web applications such as social networking, file sharing networks, blogging and participation in open discussion forums. Much publicity focuses on the sensational aspects of paedophiles on the web, but are there other issues more directly relevant to students which we need to consider? Topics covered will include safe use of the web; issues of identity theft; social networking and privacy issues; copyright and other legal issues; and commercial implications of social networking.
An opportunity to take control of your reading lists and maximise their impact

An introduction to on-line reading lists that will demonstrate a tool to create effective and accessible reading lists that will motivate your students to get reading and guide them through the core literature. You will also be given hints and tips on how to ensure your students can access relevant readings in a timely fashion.
This is not a designed as a practical session on creating and editing a new electronic list but if that is required please let us know.
UPLift: Library learning objects for Moodle

Incorporating the critical review of research posters and hands-on design work this workshop will introduce you to creative new ways of approaching research poster design that will help you make posters that are both arresting and easily understood.
