24/7 Opening Extended Until May 27th
23rd May 2012 - Due to very high demand 24/7 opening will have a short extension that means as opposed to closing at midnight on Friday 25th May we will now close at midnight on Sunday 27th May.
In response to user requests for longer opening times during the exam period The University Library, IS Open Access Suite and Postgraduate Suite are open 24hrs from 8am 30th April to midnight 27th May 2012.
However, the no card no entry rule will not be extended so Visitors and Reference card holders will be admitted from midnight Friday 25th May.

In response to demand from our postgraduate users, we will be opening longer during the summer vacation weekdays. The postgraduate study area will close at 19:45 Mondays – Fridays
Reservations will be held for collection for the usual 7 days: you will be sent notification to your UoP email account.
Short loan items will continue to be issued for 24 hours during the vacation; there is a limit of 6 unseen renewals on short loans.

3rd Space Closure
9th Mar. 2012 - 3rd Space will be closed from 12 noon on 14 March and for the whole of 15 and 16 March for the UCAS Fair. Alternative meeting and study areas, such as the Library group study rooms and group study zone, are still available on these days.
Trial access to the BioOne Database
9th Mar. 2012 - Trial access to the BioOne Database is available until May 31st.
BioOne is home to 126 not-for-profit society and institutional publishers from around the world. A truly international community, 31 BioOne participating publications are based outside of the United States, including China, South Africa, Japan, Switzerland, Finland, Poland, and Brazil. 36% of BioOne publishers include their publications’ current content exclusively on BioOne. 94% offer individual article sales on BioOne for users at non-subscribing institutions or for those in the private sector, and 31% offer their individual society members free access to their publications on BioOne.
Access is authenticated by IP address, so is available only for users on-campus and off-campus users using the University Web Proxy
Trial Access to 19th Century US Newspapers
14th Feb. 2012 - Portsmouth students have a one month free trial access to Gale's 19th Century US Newspapers database.
Access requires a username and password, and these will be found on our Passwords Page
This trial expires on March 13th 2012.
Trial Access to NewsBank's InfoWeb
14th Feb. 2012 - We have a one month trial of the NewsBank Infoweb databases 'Access Latin America' and 'FBIS-Latin America'.
E-petition about VAT on Electronic Publications
7th Feb 2012 - Unlike printed media, electronic books, journals, newspapers and magazines are subject to VAT at the full standard rate of 20%.
It has been brought to our attention that there is an e-petition requesting that the government introduce zero-rated VAT on electronic publications. We think some of our staff and students may be interested in supporting this.

Problems Accessing Science Direct from Off-Campus
Feb 1st 2012- the problems experienced accessing Science Direct from off-campus have been resolved.
New Computer Room in Library
Feb 1st 2012 - In response to student feedback in the NSS and through the Library suggestions box we have installed a new computer room, with 13 PCs, in the Library. This room can be found behind the Issue Desk in the former Photocopier room. The photocopiers have been moved around the building with one on each floor of the Library so that they are closer to the books and journals you want to copy. We will also be updating and increasing the number of PCs in the remainder of the Library in the near future.

18th Jan. 2012- At Cengage, we strive to improve the quality of our online products by making them as useful and easy to use as possible. We provide help guides and online demos to show users how our products work and the best way to use them so that you can get the most out of them.
