American and Latin American Studies - Suggested Databases

The following databases are suggested as good starting points for finding American and Latin American Studies materials. This list is not exhaustive, and you may find other databases more suited to your needs.

  • EBSCO
    covers lots of subject areas so often good for a quick starting point
  • IBSS
    contains lots of social science articles so good for politics, development, immigration, race relations etc
  • JSTOR
    a journal archive containing thousands of articles relevant to SLAS students

Useful Databases for Dissertation Work

  • Aladin
    the catalogue of the Washington Area University Research Libraries
  • Alpe
    A database of articles about Latin America which have appeared in the Spanish press from 1993 onwards. El País, ABC and El Mundo are the main papers covered.
  • HLAS Online
    A database of all the items listed in the Handbook of Latin American Studies from 1935 onwards.
  • Library of Congress
    the US equivalent of the British Library
  • Melvyl
    the catalogue of the University of California's libraries (over 9 million items)
