The following databases are suggested as good starting points for finding History materials. This list is not exhaustive, and you may find other databases more suited to your needs.

  • Bibliography of British and Irish history
    Good for finding books, chapters and articles on British and Irish history, including local history
  • British History Online
    Links to Calendars of State Papers from the 13th to 18th centuries, plus other sources for local, religious and economic history
  • EBSCO
    covers lots of subject areas so often good for a quick starting point
  • Historical Abstracts
    the world’s leading source of detailed articles and chapters on History from 1492 onwards
  • JISC Historic Books
    includes the full content of EEBO and ECCO
  • JSTOR
    a journal archive containing over 60 major History journals. For many History students, this is the number one place to search!
  • Mass Observation Online
    British Social History, 1937-1972
