Supported distance learning

The Institute delivers its programmes mainly through supported distance learning, and has extensive experience in the design, delivery and support of such programmes. Institute staff have written and edited more than 100 undergraduate and masters level distance learning course units, each drawing upon relevant expertise and designed to meet the range of learning needs.

This approach allows for fluctuations in work patterns and in students' personal lives in a framework that reflects the principles of life-long learning. Support for students is central to the success of our programmes, which we provide through a combination of:

  • Carefully designed and tested learning materials
  • Direct Support: A pro-active and responsive tutor service for all study-related queries
  • Online Learning Centres which include learning materials and discussion forums
  • Annual residential study schools

Mechanisms for peer support and student networking will be facilitated via web-based Online Learning Centres (a virtual learning environment) where each student can post a personal 'home page', use the live-chat and discussion boards, and access up-to-date information about their programmes. All students have access to Online Learning Centres (on and off-campus, worldwide) and no special software is required.
