Year Abroad

A placement abroad is a unique opportunity for you not only to enhance your language and communication skills but also to develop your knowledge and appreciation of the society or societies in which the language is spoken.  You will become more fluent and self-assured in the language and at the same time develop greater cultural awareness. This will make you more confident as a person, enhancing your employability both in the UK and abroad.

You have 3 options available to you

  • Study as a student at a university
  • Work in an organisation on a work placement scheme
  • Be an English Language Assistant in a primary or secondary school

or you can combine any 2 of these options.

University Placements

The list below shows you the University Placements in the available countries

Work Placements

These have to be arranged by the student and have to be relevant to the course being studied, But don't panic if you think you can't find one! There's a support network to help you find the right placement for you. Some placements have already been established over the years, Including the opportunity to work for the Telecommunications company Alcatel in France.

Student Testimonial

"The Year Abroad was the best year of my life, Not only did I improve my language ability, but I discovered that there is a whole world outside of the UK! Meeting people from all corners of the globe that share a passion for language learning. I learnt many things about the country from a cultural aspect as well which only added to the things I learnt in the classroom. At first it can be quite daunting living in a different country on your own, but you soon realise that everyone is in the same situation as you and everyone helps each other out. It was a chance for me to mature as an individual and I took every opportunity to make the most out of my 9 months there. Living and studying in France will forever remain the best experience in my life."
