"Welcome to the website for students at the University of Portsmouth."
The University of Portsmouth is one of the first universities in the UK to provide Google applications to all students from September 2009. Google applications include:
Google Mail – your own account, with masses of storage, to keep for ever.
All email from the University will be delivered to your Google Mail account from now on, so make sure you log in regularly and don’t miss any important information. You can also forward your other email accounts here so you can manage all your email in one place. There’s plenty of storage space, plus the email address is based on your name, so it’s easy to keep the account for life and use it forever. No need to transfer all your contacts once you’ve graduated!
If you currently use Netmail you will no longer receive emails in Netmail. Visit www.port.ac.uk/lookup to access your Google account.
Please note that if for any reason receiving your email in Google would not be convenient, for example if you are restricted in internet use, please let us know your preferred email address so we can deliver information in the most effective way for you.
Google Calendars – organise your time and share dates with friends.
Google Calendars will help you to manage your time well and never miss an appointment by using the email or text alerts. You can also set up a shared calendar with friends and colleagues.
Google Documents – share documents and work together, even when you’re not together.
Use the word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications online. You won’t lose your work, you can access it at any time and you can share it with friends and classmates when you need to work together.
Of course you can still use Victory, your virtual learning environment, and should use Victory when your work is to be assessed – your tutor should be able to advise you. Google Documents offers an alternative that you might wish to make use of outside of Victory.
Google Sites – build your own website for work or for play.
Build you own websites for fun, for work or for your club or society. Share them with selected friends or with the whole wide world.
Google Talk – Chat for free and share files instantly.
Google Talk lets you chat online with a friend or with a group, on your computer or on your mobile, and with the right equipment you can use video talk too.
