Meningitis

All students and staff should be aware of the symptoms of meningitis and remain vigilant.

Signs and symptoms of meningitis are:

  • Violent and severe headaches
  • High temperature/fever
  • Vomiting
  • Neck stiffness
  • Dislike of bright lights
  • Drowsiness/lethargy
  • Joint pains
  • Fits
  • A rash may appear

If you or a friend or relative are showing any of these symptoms you should immediately contact the doctor (GP) you are registered with (if not registered contact the University Surgery at the Nuffield Centre or the Medical Centre on the Langstone Campus) or call NHS Direct 0845 4647.

If you are feeling extremely unwell then go immediately to the Accident and Emergency department at Queen Alexandra Hospital. If you have no access to transport then dial 999 for an ambulance.
