Speak UP - The National Student Survey 2013

The National Student Survey (NSS) 2013 launches at Portsmouth on Monday 14 January. Entering its ninth year, the NSS is your opportunity to give your opinions on what you liked about your time here as well as things that you felt could have been improved.

The NSS is a survey of final year students, and allows you to provide feedback on a range of topics, including what you thought about the Academic Support you received during your studies, how you felt about the Organisation and Management of your course and what you think of your Students’ Union.

For the first time, the 2013 survey includes two questions specifically selected by your student representatives, to really get to the heart of your experience at Portsmouth.

By sparing just a few minutes to complete the NSS you can really make change. Let’s see what’s been said already and what the University has done about it so far:

You said: 87 per cent of you were satisfied with your courses - this is three per cent higher than the average for England.

You said: 92 per cent of you said that staff were good at explaining things and 88 per cent said that staff are enthusiastic about what they are teaching.
We did: We have looked at what you particularly valued and worked to improve things even further. We’re also looking at what the 13 per cent didn’t feel satisfied with, so we can make improvements.

You said: The University Library should be open for longer.
We did: The Library will open 24 hours from 14 January until the end of the exam period on 31 May, closing only for Good Friday and Easter Monday. This increases 24/7 opening from seven weeks last year to 20 weeks this year.

You said: We want to see our exam timetables earlier.
We did: Exam timetables for 2013 will be published six weeks earlier than they were in 2012.

You said: There are not enough copies of some books in the Library for us to use.
We did: We have worked with lecturers to make sure we buy the books you need. We try to buy ebooks for core texts where we can and also scan book chapters to ensure you have a copy to hand.

You said: We want quicker and more useful feedback on our work.
We did: We restructured the academic year to remove semesters and provide more opportunities for you to receive feedback on your work. A project is also underway in some areas of the University to promote the online submission, marking and return of work.

You said: We want more PCs available on campus.
We did: We’ve added 50 more PCs in the Library Open Access area plus self service netbooks in the Library and Portland Open Access areas. We will also be redesigning the ground floor of the Library during summer 2013 to provide more computer and study space.
