The University of Portsmouth is committed to renewable energy sources where practicable, and ensuring our actions are as environmentally sustainable as possible. Through the continuous monitoring of energy usage we endeavour to reduce energy consumption year on year, minimising the cost of energy to the University, carbon emissions and ultimately our impact on the environment. To facilitate this, the University is, for example, extending its sub-metering systems to allow more specific monitoring of its energy consumption. This will enable us to ensure that economising measures can be accurately targeted to best effect, with significant long-term financial benefit to the University and the environment.
The UK Higher Education sector emits 3 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year. At the University of Portsmouth we are committed to reducing these high levels and various initiatives are underway to help improve these figures. Now it really is over to you as students to become more carbon friendly. You should not leave lights, computers and other electronic equipment on when you’re not in your room. The yellow 'Switch It Off' stickers appearing around halls have been put up to remind you to 'Switch It Off' when you leave your room. This is also good practice to get in to for life in private sector accommodation. Think of all the money you will save by getting into good practices now as well as helping reduce your University’s carbon footprint. Follow the progress in your hall of residence by checking the energy rating that will be displayed regularly on the environmental notice board in each foyer.
Each hall has now been environmentally assessed and given its own energy certificate. These ratings are based on energy consumption and building efficiency and scale between 'A' highly efficient to 'E' very poor. Look out for your buildings energy rating displayed on the environmental notice board along side the buildings monthly recycling stats.
