Sharing your home

For many of you it will be the first time you have lived away from home and for those of you who have lived away before, it is probably still a new experience to be sharing facilities with such a large group of new people from different cultures and different values, therefore it is essential that all residents respect the needs and views of others to everyone can enjoy their time in halls. To ensure you can live together happily, it is worth thinking about the following:

  • Talk to your neighbours and don't get stressed – if you're having a problem, it's likely other people are feeling the same
  • Everyone has different values, so make sure you respect others
  • Everybody will have a different schedule, so be considerate and keep the noise down
  • When using shared facilities such as kitchens, keep appliances such as cookers, microwaves and refrigerators clean, so everyone can benefit from them
  • If all else fails, talk to an RA or your SSM, who will mediate to help resolve any problems

Commitment to equality and diversity in halls

We would like all our residents to know we strongly support the University's commitment to valuing equality and diversity in the student population and are firmly opposed to any form of discrimination.

Our staff work to create the conditions whereby all students and staff are treated on the basis of their merits regardless of gender, colour, ethnic or national origin, age, disability, religious or political beliefs, family circumstances or sexual orientation. We promote an environment where residents can engage with this experience and value the benefits of living with and learning from others of a different background or culture. Our Student Support Team provides measures such as flat discussions and mediations to help residents in this process. If you believe any of our policies or literature are unfair, we welcome your views and opinions. Please raise any concerns with either your Hall or Student Support Manager.
