General advice

Crime prevention: Theft prevention (windows)

  • Never leave personal possessions unattended. Take them with you or lock them out of sight. Be especially careful when working on a computer or studying in the library.
  • Do not withdraw more money than you need. When using an cash machine make sure you are not being overlooked when you key in your PIN number.
  • When entering any building with a secure entry system, be aware of people trying to follow you through. The opportunist thief will try this if he/she is not challenged.
  • If you are in doubt or you are sure that someone has followed you through, please contact the University Security and Surveillance department immediately.
  • Register all your valuable property online at www.immobilise.com.

WASP Locks

Why not take advantage of a free WASP lock?

The cycle protection system operates by using a motion sensor tag which is securely attached to a 'D' lock on the bike. Once the system is activated by the owner, it's then monitored by the University Security Lodge.

If anyone tampers with your cycle while the system is active, a CCTV camera within the vicinity automatically zooms into the allocated zone and informs Security Lodge of a suspected theft/incident occurring. The Control Room Operator assesses the type of response required - whether the incident was accidental or a theft in progress.

This new deterrent in cycle security is the first of its kind, and as such the University is working in partnership with Hampshire Constabulary to ensure of its success.

Currently, we have two active locations within the University - the cycle racks along King Henry I Street and the cycle racks outside Richmond Building. If this system is successful, further areas will be reviewed for implementation.

You can trial the new system free of charge, during the duration of your studies. Simply go to Security Lodge (behind University House) during office hours to collect your lock, and return it to us when you graduate.
