I have a 30 year research record in retailing. My 1980s studies in the Portsmouth area helped to provide the underpinning to the “Sequential Test” in UK Planning policy guidance. I have addressed the National Planning Inspectorate, given evidence to the House of Commons All Party Parliamentary Small Shops Group, and helped compile their 2006 study “High Street Britain 2015”.
I have been a Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Select Committee on Communities and Local Government and have held Professorial posts at Staffordshire and Manchester Metropolitan Universities. I have also taught at Manchester Business School, University of Surrey and Southampton University.

As Director, Service Industries Research Centre, I was responsible for the final delivery of our phase of a EUROSTAT funded investigation (circa £200,000) of the service sector in the UK and Ireland.
