Marketing and Sales

Who we are

Our subject group delivers Marketing and Sales based modules to students involved in undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes across the entire Business School. Our programmes are dedicated to producing successful professionals in the fields of marketing, hospitality, tourism and sales. Through strong links with industry and professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing and Institute of Sales and Marketing Management, we ensure that our courses are relevant and innovative. We are committed to supporting and engaging in excellent research which can generate real benefits for business, the education and learning experiences of our students and society more broadly. Many members of the teaching team have extensive experience in business. We contribute to contemporary debate about marketing, such as radio interviews on the John Lewis Christmas advertisement and the beneficial effect of street markets on towns. We are also known for our research in digital and social media, advertising, employagility and sales management.

Our courses are integrally linked to marketing and sales best practice, and we have close links with marketers in a variety of organisations.

Marketing students have the opportunity to work on live client cases throughout their degree

Marketing students at Portsmouth have the opportunity to work on live client cases throughout their degree.  Students have worked on live projects with organisations including Portsmouth Football Club, Army Reserve Recruitment, Portsmouth City Council, Relate and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, as well as with smaller, local businesses. The projects involve identifying key business issues for the organisations and investigating them through primary and secondary data collection and analysis. Students present the findings to their client, and have impressed senior decision makers in the organisations with their recommendations for enhancing the organisations' activities.

As well as working on live cases, you will find yourself working on innovative projects, strategic marketing and selling simulations (Market2win) and cases from recent business news. A variety of interesting guest speakers from commercial organisations and other universities contribute to our classes such as Dan Brown of VCCP  on "The changing digital landscape" and Iain Black on “Scarcity in consumption”.

We encourage students to take part in national and international competitions, organise field trips, invite a variety of guest speakers from industry and offer support for achieving concurrent professional qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, as an accredited study centre and Graduate Gateway award provider.

Active learning

Our team includes leading researchers in the field of employagility.

Relevance is embedded in the curriculum from the enterprise project and opportunities to enter international competitions for marketing students in the first year, to working on the current marketing challenges of local businesses and organisations in the second year, to exciting placements and consultancy assignments in the final year. Within MA Digital Marketing, students work on digital and social media strategies for local voluntary organisations.
