Thesis summary

Multiple Criteria Evaluation of Economic Units by Composite Indices

In recent times, composite indicators have met with an astonishing popularity in a wide variety of research areas. Their adoption by global institutions has further captured the attention of media and policymakers around the globe and the number of their applications has surged since. This increase in their popularity solicits a plethora of methodological contributions as a response to the large criticism surrounding their underlying framework. This project contributes to the existing literature by developing a novel methodology for composite indices, based on the Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) framework.

This project contributes to the existing literature by developing a novel methodology for composite indices, based on the Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) framework. Its aim is to offer a potential solution to the two main issues of constructing a composite index, namely the weighting and aggregation of the indicators. Once such a technique is developed, a second objective is to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to explore its effects in applications on several socio-economic areas in need of multidimensional performance measurement. Based on the contrasting literature on Regional Competitiveness Index and the OECD initiative, the most promising exercise would be the ranking of regions worldwide. However, the scope of analysis can be easily extended to other entities in both the private and public sector.
