Biography

I became a full time senior lecturer at Portsmouth Business School in September 2007 following several years of combining part time lecturing with consultancy work.  Prior to taking up my current career in Higher Education, I held several roles in both front-line management and Human Resources (HR), within a range of organisations. My front-line management experience has led to a continued interest in leadership and management related topics. My last full time organisational role was as Head of HR Development within the telecommunications sector, thus not surprisingly my main specialist HR field is Learning, Training and Development (LTD).  But as a member of the senior HR team, in a rapidly expanding business sector, I also gained experience in recruitment/selection, succession planning, talent management and performance management, all topics which continue to interest me.

Teaching Responsibilities

My business experience has informed the lecturing I have done which includes a range of topics within the organisational studies and HR fields with a particular focus on leadership, management and LTD.  I have also coordinated units and carried out the role of Admissions Tutor for the BA (Hons) Business Studies and BA (Hons) Business Administration courses for a number of years.

Research

The over-arching theme of my research is significant learning.  My practitioner background drives an ongoing interest in organisational training and development, but I am also heavily involved in studies related to student learning in the higher education context.  As such my research can be categorised under three sub themes.  Firstly: “Graduate Employability” and as a sub-set of this “Proactive personality” and its potential to impact upon employment. Linked to this I am currently working on two longitudinal studies related to placement hunting and career management teaching.  Secondly: the field of “Leadership”, with a bias towards implicit leadership, negative leadership and leader development. My current research activity in this area is linked to the concept of “Business buccaneers” and the challenge faced by higher education in meeting divergent stakeholder expectations when developing the next generation of leaders. Thirdly, and related to the first two, is the topic of “Reflective learning”. To this end I continue to explore the use of experiential approaches, reflective practice and the giving and receiving of feedback in higher education. These research interests are reflected in my publication output which includes a number of book chapters and academic journal articles.

In line with my research interests I am leader of the Business Education Research Group (BERG).
