The City of Portsmouth

Portsmouth is in a central south coast location with great accessibility by road, sea and air.  The main part of the city is built on the natural island of Portsea and has a friendly, cosmopolitan and quirky character. With its proud naval and maritime heritage, towering attractions, museums and galleries and of course, miles and miles of waterfront, this is a city worth a visit. Two trains an hour come direct into the city from central London with a journey time of around 90 minutes, Southampton airport is just 20 minutes away by road and both Gatwick and Heathrow are within 60 miles. In addition ferry services come direct to the city from France and Spain.

Suggested Travel Options

If you are flying to the UK, the closest airport is Southampton but the airports with greater connections are London Gatwick and London Heathrow. The closest London airport is London Gatwick where you can take a direct train to Portsmouth, usually taking a little more than an hour. From Heathrow there is a train+bus solution that takes a little over two hours. Train tickets can be bought online using the National Rail Enquiries website. Depending on where delegates may be traveling from, Eurostar also offers regular train connections from Paris and Brussels to London St Pancras International, with onward connections to Portsmouth from London Waterloo or London Victoria train stations.

An alternative travel option includes, travel by bus using National Express from London Victoria Coach Station or the above airports. There is also a very good taxi service directly from airport terminals to your accommodation, which is especially worthwhile if travelling with other delegates. Local taxi companies include Aqua Cars and Smiths for airport travel with fixed rates for both airports of approximately £60.
