Strategic Formulation and Implementation in a Small Swiss Private Bank

As in other countries and regions the banking sector in parts of Switzerland is experiencing intensifying global competition, increasingly stringent and comprehensive regulation (i.e. tax transparency) and it is coping with all of this through a process of restructuring,  consolidation and significant investments in IT. The proximity of a vast Italian hinterland introduces effects specific to the Ticino region of Switzerland and creates sensitivity to Italian dwindling economy and to its tax system under scrutiny. Having exhausted most options to cut operational costs, some small banking organizations are looking to develop new strategic paths to cope in this challenging context.

My action-orientated research will focus on strategic planning and change management in this dynamic and turbulent environment. As a well-connected practitioner with primary responsibility for this “revolution” inside the case study bank my research will set out to make explicit and coherent strategic diagnosis and planning process appropriate for a small organization context and consider the implications for implementing strategic change in a context of limited resource availability to achieve a sustainable market positioning.
