Transfer of insights from the world of endurance sports to leadership coaching in business

My research aims to examine key performance coaching practices from endurance sports and to analyse the extent to which these might be optimised in leadership development processes in business and management contexts. Business leaders have an important influence on outcome and overall performance and many executive coaching practitioners assert that ‘out-of-the-box thinking’ offers important opportunities for potential improvement to performance at individual and organizational levels in many different organizational contexts.

My work will draw on interviews with renowned coaches. Based on an analysis of the success factors, ideas and concepts that emerge from analysis of this interview data an assessment of potential learning opportunities for business leaders will be made. The next phase of the project will involve discussions of these ideas and concepts with those responsible for leadership coaching to further validate the framework that may emerge and to ensure that a contribution to practice as well as to (coaching) theory is made.

The findings will provide an interesting new perspective on feasible, worthwhile, appropriate and stretching advancement of leadership coaching theory and practise.
