Coastal Built Heritage and Sustainability

  • Application end date: Applications accepted all year round
  • Funding Availability: Self-funded PhD students only
  • Department: Portsmouth School of Architecture
  • PhD Supervisor: Dr Karen Fielder

Project detail:

Applications are invited for research proposals that are concerned with tangible and/or intangible aspects of built heritage under coastal or island conditions, including environmental, social and cultural conditions. Proposals are particularly welcome for topics that suggest novel approaches to heritage regeneration, adaptive reuse, and community identity and which address issues of cultural sustainability. Due regard should be paid to the common experiences of heritage in such liminal contexts. These might include the close connection between natural and built heritage, defence and resistance, containment, obsolescence, risks such as climatic deterioration, transitory populations, tourist development, the exploitation of heritage and impacts on identity. The focus might be at the scale of the urban, the neighbourhood, the building or the interior.

The applicant will work in the School of Architecture within the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries.

Eligibility:

Applicants will have a good first degree (minimum 2.1 or equivalent) in a related subject and a strong interest in pursuing research in this field. Applicants with a relevant Masters qualification are also welcome. Applicants should have a background in conservation, architecture, urban design, interior design or related disciplines. Previous experience in areas related to historic buildings and contexts is desirable.
