Challenges in Interactive Digital Museums and Long-term Legacy

This project will develop methods and tools to support museum public engagement through interactive technologies, providing access, information and manipulation in real time. There will be an emphasis on experiential learning and interpretation of non standard artefacts with curatorial challenges. A key element will be flexibility and adaptability to the rapidly changing digital landscape to provide effective digital reconstruction and preservation linked to culture context and purpose. A core aspect is to ensure current content whilst ensuring long term heritage and legacy in an age where hardware and software obsolescence may be rapid. The solutions should be modular and dynamic allowing for changes in pedagogic aspects, interpretation as well as audience needs and wider long term preservation strategies.
The project will use 3D reconstruction, RGB-D sensor and alternative scanning methods and have an emphasis on emerging interactive technologies including Virtual or augmented Reality. The project involves real-time processing and application, so skills and experience in hardware-based programming are of particular interest. Previous experience in Interactive technology, motion tracking, 3D reconstruction using depth sensors, and 3D modelling will be advantageous. Applicants with qualifications or experience in an additional discipline such as history, archaeology, curation, science or medicine etc would be very much encouraged.
The applicant will work at the School of Creative Technologies within the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries but may be expected to work with approved museums.
Applicants will have a good first degree (minimum 2.1 or equivalent) in a related subject and a strong interest in pursuing research in this field. Applicants with a relevant Masters qualification are also welcome. Interdisciplinary applicants who can demonstrate qualifications or experience in 2 or more distinct fields related to this work would be strongly encouraged. Applicants should have a background in computer programming, either in computer science or computer games or animation disciplines although others will be considered. Previous experience in areas related to the project is of particular interest.
