Training and support
As a postgraduate researcher you will be part of a thriving research community and have access to a wide range of resources to support your development. Our Graduate School provides support through a comprehensive researcher development programme, events and workshops, and a virtual learning environment. Your Faculty Supervisor and The University's Graduate School will be with you throughout your research.
Before you start
Before you start, you will be allocated a supervisory team who will support your academic and professional development throughout your studies.
When you arrive
You will receive a comprehensive induction to life as a postgraduate research student at the University, providing introductions to staff, faculties and the services available to you. It will also give you the opportunity to meet other research degree students and supervisors.
Throughout your research
Graduate School Development Programme
You will be able to access a wide range of research skills training through the Graduate School Development Programme. This programme offers over 100 workshops and special interest groups on a wide range of topics including research design, personal effectiveness and doctoral process.
Subject specific training
You will also be able to access advanced and subject-specific training within your faculty and participate in departmental and faculty events including research seminars and conferences.
Should you wish you can develop your teaching skills though the Graduate Students Professional Development (GProf) course.
In addition to running dedicated training events for postgraduate researchers, our experienced careers advisers are on hand to help you plan for your time at university and beyond at our dedicated careers service Purple Door.
All students at the University can access a variety of support services such as the Academic Skills Unit, Maths Café and the University Library. If English is not your first language, you can gain extra support from the English for Academic Purposes courses.
