Research Activities

Advanced Manufacturing Engineering research group is active in Knowledge Transfer with regional industry, the RCMI, managed byProfessor Bennett with Dr Onuh, Graham-Jones and Popov plays a major supportive role to research in Manufacturing, Rapid Product Development, Rapid Tooling, Optimisation of process parameters and Systems Engineering, through its advanced rapid prototyping facilities and through KTP programmes (current value £396k), with in many cases MPhil/PhD links.

The RCMI is UK technical co-ordinator in an EC 5th Framework Thematic Research Programme, Composites Intelligence Exchange, value to the University £85k. The support facilities of the RCMI have been further strengthened by a major new contract with HEFCE commencing mid-04 to create and operate a Knowledge Exchange in the SE Region for Manufacturing & Design innovation, value £1M through 04-05 with potential for extension through 06-08 with additional funding of £1.5M.

Also £600k has been allocated from HEIF2 to the RCMI to promote inter-disciplinary R&D in creative technologies, manufacturing and electronics and an EPSRC Collaborative Training Account has been awarded, value £250k, to run through 04-08. The MSc training package will focus on studies in product innovation processes, including intellectual property, collaborative virtual commerce and rapid product realisation.

Examples of our research

We have a well equipped laboratory with a wide range of facilities for manufacturing, rapid product development, rapid tooling, optimisation of process parameters and systems engineering.
