Description [Back to top]

This event provides a series of talks by some of the leading scholars in the field of Hispanic film studies. It focuses on a number of specific spheres: the relationship between controversial and new ways of representing gender and sexuality and global visibility; the industrial contexts in which these films were made, distributed and exhibited; and the role of important and influential producers (Bertha Navarro, and Lita Stantic) in creating Latin American film for a global stage. There will also be a talk on one of the pioneers of women’s filmmaking in Mexico, Marcela Fernández Violante, whose career has spanned 5 decades, yet, whose work has been neglected by Latin American film scholars. The remaining talks consider the work of key contemporary Latin American women filmmakers, Lucrecia Martel (including a video essay by Catherine Grant), and Claudia Llosa, both of whom are making an impact on the global stage by winning internationally recognized awards at film festivals, but who are also creating controversy through new and challenging representations of gender, sexuality and ethnicity in Llosa’s case.

Latin American Women Filmmakers on the Global Stage is funded by the Centre for Cultural and Creative Research, a research body within the University of Portsmouth's Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries.
