Profile
| MA (Oxon) |
In 2004, I retired from the University of Westminster as Emeritus Professor in Mass Communications and joined the University of Portsmouth as an Honorary Research Professor in 2005. As well as conducting my own research, I also participated in the university’s AHRC-funded Research Programme into British Cinema during the 1970s.
My main areas of research are the history of cinema-going in Britain, and British and European broadcasting policy. I am especially interested in the manner in which political and economic decisions in the fields of cinema and broadcasting shape – or fail to shape - the viewing habits of audiences.

Between 2005 and 2008, I was also elected to be the President of EURALVA, the European Alliance of Listeners’ and Viewers’ Associations. When I stepped down in 2008, EURALVA asked me to remain as their Adviser on European Media Policy. I am also a Member of the Advisory Committee of the European Audiovisual Observatory, which is based in Strasbourg. The Observatory was originally established by the Council of Europe, and is now also supported by the Commission of the European Union.
