In collaboration with Corpus Linguists in the South, the Languages across Borders research group have a guest lecture by Dr Alison Sealey of the University of Birmingham on the interdisciplinary topic of 'Corpus-assisted discourse analysis in social research' on Thursday 7 February at 5pm in Park 2.09.

The presentation will report on three projects involving the re-processing, for corpus assisted discourse analysis, of data collected by social scientists. It will use examples from each of these projects to demonstrate how the tools of the corpus assisted discourse analyst can be used to shed new light on the data, as well as how the expertise of researchers in other disciplines can contribute to the research pursued by the discourse analyst. The three projects are:

1. The Millennibrum project.
2. Reflexivity and the ‘internal conversation.
3. The Animals and Humans directive from the Mass Observation Project.
