Research CV

Current Research Projects

My PhD project argues for the primary role of interlingual, intralingual and intersemiotic translation in the evolution of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels (1726) in eighteenth-century Britain and in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Italy. The study compares the processes involved in the translation of Gulliver’s Travels into Italian with the mechanisms which regulate the production of abridgments, children’s adaptations and visual representations of Swift’s work. My primary aim is to provide the evidence that significant analogies exist between the strategies adopted by abridgers, re-writers and illustrators and the choices made by translators who operate across languages. By presenting what are commonly labelled as ‘adaptations’ of Gulliver’s Travels as the result of the combination of processes of interlingual, intralingual and intersemiotic translation, my research proposes to promote a deeper understanding of the role of translation in book history.
