Profile

Md. Shahid Uddin Khan is a student in first year in Full Time Programme of Research Leading to Award of Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in the School of Languages and Area Studies of Portsmouth University. The title of his research is “Military Intervention and Its Impacts on Socio-politico-economic Conditions of Bangladesh”. Bangladesh experienced military involvement in politics since 15 August 1975 after the mournful death of the Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on that very day. Due to military rules for decades in Bangladesh, neither the democratic institutions can function properly nor the military could achieve its exclusivity till today and no effective measure has so far been taken to improve the situation. Therefore, the democracy of Bangladesh remains always prone to military interventions directly or indirectly. His research presents the first study of its kind exploring the gamut of the socio-politico-military ravages caused mainly due to low political culture and unchallengeable military laws based on contradictory constitutional provisions.

Before enrolling on a PhD programme at Portsmouth he served in Bangladesh Army over 21 years up to the rank of Colonel and acquired professional experiences at Mid and Higher Level Leadership and Management holding a wide range of Command, Staff and Instructional Appointments. Experiences include working with the Troops in the field, participating in Decision Making Process in Brigade and Division Headquarters, In Aid of Civil Power, Disaster Management, Humanitarian Assistance Program and Operating in Counter Insurgency Environment.

He had obtained a wide range of experiences by serving as Battalion Staff Officer in the rank of Major under United Nations Peace Keeping Operations in Mozambique (ONUMOZ) in 1993–94. Again as a Leader of United Nations Observer Team in Democratic Republic of Congo in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2002.

He has outstanding achievements in conducting successful Anti-Smuggling Operations by breaking the Record of 32 years in such operations as well as solving many border issues on Diplomatic Table as Battalion Commander for over two years in Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB). His achievements were recognized and he was awarded as well.

After retiring from Bangladesh Army on 31 May 2005, he continued his research works on socio-politico-military and security matters like before. He served as Security Adviser in private sector for about three years. He worked as Research Officer in Directorate General of Forces Intelligence of Bangladesh and carried out research on ‘Deradicalization’ for months in 2007. At present, he is the Chief Executive in Power Generation and Land Developers Companies. He is also carrying out charitable and social works as the Chairman of the non-governmental organization (NGO) named Prochhaya Foundation; research works on security matters are also being carried out here.
