International Development Studies and Security Issues (IDSSC)

International Development Studies, Security and Conflict are growing areas of research at Portsmouth with an expanding body of expertise alongside a significant increase in the number of PhD students working on these topics. The study of these areas is global in reach incorporating social, cultural and economic perspectives combining a number of social science disciplines. Members of this cluster come from a range of disciplinary backgrounds including social anthropology, human geography, sociology, international relations, politics, economics and health demography. The research topics explored include US security issues, Anglo-French security cooperation, religious extremism, migration, the environment and development, water and food security, participatory governance, ngo accountability, demographic change and health, women and labour rights, gender-based violence and harmful cultural practices. The regional expertise of cluster members includes South, South-East, and East Asia; East, West and South Africa; Latin America and the Caribbean.
