Dr. Wattage is the Project Leader of the research project EMBioC, funded by the Darwin Initiatives of the Department of Environment, UK. The objective of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation of wetlands in Sri Lanka. Methodological development of passive use (non-use) values will be carried out as a part of this project with the intention to use in cost-benefits analysis. He also works in another project funded by the European Union, looking at the Multiple Objectives in the Management of EU Fisheries (MOFISH) in five European nations. In addition to research, he is currently teaching Econometrics, Quantitative Economics and Environmental Economics.

He has worked on several development projects funded by the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, DFID and the FAO of the UNDP. He has enhanced his postgraduate education with more than ten years of teaching and research experience in the area of Agricultural Development Economics in development countries. Over the last fifteen years, he has gained experience and knowledge in the areas of coastal resource evaluation, water resource evaluation, environmental policy and analysis, environmental impact assessment, bio-diversity conservation, ecological & economic modelling, forest & wildlife management in the UK, USA, European and developing countries. Journals he has published his work in include Impact Assessment and Project Appraisal and Ciwem Journal of Charted Institute of Water and Environment Management.
