Abstract
There is evidence to suggest that for reasons to do with self-identification as ‘other’ that Jewish Londoners have a heightened awareness of where they are within the public realm (paraphrasing Vaughan, 2012). Rituals, performativity, social practices that are played out in “private” may bleed into what is recorded in “public,” for instance on a walk (see Botticello 2007: 7-24).
Therefore in my current practical PhD entitled “My Jewish London,” I test the utility of the filmed performative, contemplative walk as a method to decentre, challenge and upstage the dominant representation of Jewish London in mainstream documentary.
