CORD Members to attend First Global Islamic Marketing Conference

Sarah Turnbull and Liza Howe-Walsh, members of the The University of Portsmouth’s Centre for Organisational Research and Development (CORD) are to attend the first Global Islamic Marketing and Management Conference to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in March 2011. The delegates attending from CORD will be amongst a number of researchers and academics presenting papers at the conference.

The Islamic market has been heralded as an emerging market and is attracting increasing academic and practitioner interest.  The conference will provide a forum for debate and an opportunity to share research findings and ideas in this area. Sarah and Liza will both be presenting papers at the conference that is to be held in city of Dubai.

Sarah’s research specialism is in the area of marketing communications and her prior studies include a study of advertising standardisation in the Middle East markets (Melewar, Turnbull & Balabanis, 2000). At the conference, Sarah will be presenting the findings of a more recent study which explores business-to-business buyer behaviour in an Islamic market. The paper, which is co-authored by Colin Wheeler, also from The University of Portsmouth, examines how advertisers in the UAE market select their advertising agency.  Speaking about the conference Sarah said, “it is very exciting to be part of this inaugural conference and be able to share research findings and debate current issues in Islamic marketing and management with other researchers from around the world “ .

As well as an active research interest in this area, Sarah also has eight years practitioner experience working in the marketing communications industry in the Middle East and has expertise in developing marketing communications strategy for Islamic markets for brands such as Emirates.

Liza’s research expertise is in the area of Global mobility and her prior studies include Self initiated expatriates (Schyns and Howe-Walsh, 2010) as well as practitioner studies to develop field of International HR.  Liza will be presenting a paper about the role of Human Resource (HR) policies and practices for business-to-business development in Islamic markets. Liza explains, “there is a gap in the academic literature about the value that HR practices and policies and how they can add to organisations in Islamic markets.  “We hope that this paper will engage both academics and practitioners attending the conference leading to future collaborative research studies”.

The conference is being hosted by The United Arab Emirates University and Emerald Group Publishing, under the patronage of HH Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of UAE University.
