Start date: Thu, 23 Feb 2012 18:00:00 GMT
Finish date: Thu, 23 Feb 2012 20:00:00 GMT

The University of Portsmouth in collaboration with the Mineralogical Society is proud to present a guest lecture from Professor Randall Parrish, Head of the NERC Isotope Geoscience Laboratory and Lecturer in Field Geology at the University of Leicester.

Prof. Parrish will be reflecting on the seminal works of Arthur Holmes, a key contributor in the field of Earth Sciences and discussing how his publications played a pivotal role in the development and dissemination of theories surrounding the geological age of minerals and radioactive decay, captured in his well renowned book “The Age of Earth”.

Further discussions will critique the development of measuring radioactive decay and review how the field of Geochronology has evolved allowing U‐Pbdating to be applied in the contexts of application and analysis methods, integration with petrology, precision and spatial resolution and the utilisation of U‐Pbdating in measuring the age of the solar system.

Reflections on the frontiers of Geochronology will be presented, whilst reflecting how 100 years ago Arthur Holmes recognised the importance of the methods now used in understanding our earth system.
