4. standardised mortality ratios in the north of england, 1958

This second example of data from the Statistical Reviews is a slight cheat: by the 1950s, the local government district tables were computing a 'ratio of local adjusted death rate to national rate', based on age structure and expressed as a value varying around 1. This figure has been restated as a percentage and mapped here. As with the previous map, it shows high mortality rates concentrated into the Tyneside conurbation, but note also high rates in rural mining areas.
