Research within this IBBS division is directly related to
the scientific basis of medicine.

The major areas are:
a) Oncology (in particular neuro-oncology, prostate, breast and lung cancer and melanoma) where research is based both within the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences and the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. There are numerous clinical collaborations between the Cellular and Molecular Medicine Division and various academic centres and specialist hospital centres, both nationally and internationally and
b) Neurosciences where research concentrates on various aspects of glial, neuronal & neuromuscular cell biology as applied to medicine, in particular Professor Butt's group are involved with the study of oligodendroglia and their precursor in demyelinating lesions such as in multiple sclerosis. Professor Gorecki's group are studying neuromuscular disease and neuronal function in disease while Professor Pilkington's group focus on primary brain tumours as well as astrocytic response to various neuropathological conditions.

In addition, genetic-based research programmes as well as immunology, microbiology and haematology research is carried out under the auspices of this division.
