Intelligent Transport Systems: Future vision

Dr Muna Hamdi

Summarising Outcomes

The idea of this event started in a conversation with Steve George during a car trip around Birmingham Traffic Control Centres during Traffex, where I realised that we need to influence change, hence the idea for this event was born.

I think at the time I didn?t envisage that I will be able to trigger that amount of enthusiasm.

Ongoing outcomes are:

  1. To have an ITS: Future Vision discussion group based on the current group. The aim of the group is; Shaping the future of ITS: to identify the future Vision of ITS; what is Seamless Travel and what is the road map to that future?
  2. To have an open discussion group with the outside world to help in identifying New Out of The Box Thinkers to join in future events, projects, debates, ideas generation, or problem definition and future policies.
  3. To have quarterly discussions, and a similar event/conference once a year.
  4. To group in a new ITS Future Vision Centre.
  5. To open up to international communities working for ITS. There are several national and international groups with LinkedIn that we can work with.
  6. To support other events such as the Carbon agenda Event.
  7. To help organise an ITS event in collaboration with ITS ARAB (Tunisia).
  8. Writing articles and discussing ITS: Future Vision in international Journals.
  9. Promoting ?ITS: Future Vision? FP7 ICT project Join-MED Networking Events

Feedback from delegates:

Stephen Hart, Innovation Platform Leader ITSS, Technology Strategy Board: We had an interested group that are real in their motivation in trying solve the challenges, and yesterday that stood out for me. I'm keen to work with and support such a group, and move away from the usual non productive debates.

Stephen George, SG Transport Innovation Ltd: Thanks to your organisation and the content of the event it proved to be better than I could have initially envisaged. We seem to have hit on the basis of a formula that we should continue to exploit?

Richard Harris, Director Intelligent Transport Systems Logica: A stimulation event addressing the key issues for the future of ITS, transportation and society, well organised and high level participation.

Keith McCabe, Principal Consultant - ITS , Highways and Transportation, Atkins : I thought the conference worked well yesterday. The good mix of what might be termed insiders (industry experts) and outsiders (experts from other fields) worked well. I send my appreciation for all the time and effort you put into organising yesterday?s conference and making it a success.

Professor John Preston, Director, Transportation Research Group, University of Southampton: Thanks for organising an interesting day

Graham Ellis, Managing Director, Ellis International Transport Consulting Ltd & Chairman Transport & Logistics Task Group: Thanks for a great conference; it was well worth waiting for.
