Research Activities

We are concerned with the understanding of mechanics in artificial joints and musculoskeletal systems relevant to orthopeadic research. In collaboration with the Orthopaedic Department, Queen Alexandra Hospital, research has been carried out to understand the load transfer and stress distribution in artificially replaced acetabular cups under physiological loading conditions. Fundamental research is also being conducted to understand the interface behaviour between bone and cement, using fracture mechanics approaches. Experimental studies are significantly enhanced by the development of a unique hip simulator for in-vitro fatigue testing of implanted acetabular. We also undertake research and development tasks in evaluating performances of novel implant designs.

The work has been supported by the Medical Research Council (MRC), the Royal Society, Arthritis Research Council, Queen Alexandra Hospital, DePuy CMW UK, Stryker UK.
