An expert in development economics has been appointed the University of Portmouth Business SchoolÂ’s new Associate Dean of Research.
Professor Andy Thorpe has undertaken varied research projects, including how animal emissions of methane are affecting the environment - which generated strong international and national media coverage - to how fisheries in Central Asia and Africa are being affected by changes in state regimes and climate.
He said: “The role will be a challenge in light of the new fees regime, the increased competition for funding, and the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework. It is, however, a challenge I look forward to taking on.
“In the current climate I believe it is crucial to continue to explore synergies with businesses and other academic institutions and also to encourage young researchers. I look forward to working collaboratively with fellow professors to identify new avenues of research which could have a meaningful impact on society.”
Professor Thorpe has published papers in internationally renowned journals such as World Development, Food Policy, Climatic Change and Kyklos, and has carried out research work for the European Union, the World Bank and the Food and Agriculture Organisation.
He is a member of the editorial board of Economic Issues and Environmental Management, a regular reviewer of articles for a wide variety of academic journals and has presented papers all over the world. Professor Thorpe has also published three books in Spanish on the political economy of Central American agriculture and is currently working on improving fish supply chains in Kyrgyzstan.
After a stint as a visiting Professor in agricultural economics at the National State University of Honduras, Professor Thorpe returned to the UK and has lectured at the University of Portsmouth since 1993.
