  • The programme is an incentive for talent retention
  • Our partnership could result in a “Corporate University” for your organisation

Our track record of success

Example videos of student feedback. In 2010 Hewlett Packard’s (HP) vice-president of Customer Experience and Strategy, Maurice Fitzgerald, signed a deal with the Portsmouth Business School to train its ‘Black Belt’ champions. This elite group of individuals were hand-picked by HP to study for a specially adapted Masters programme to support ‘lean’ methodology which is designed to help them turn HP into an even more responsive and efficient company. The technology company which employs approximately 304,000 worldwide and operates in more than 170 countries identified 21 high flyers to study on the work-based learning programme. The students are now nearing the end of the course and have nothing but praise for the successful partnership, which sees them gain a Masters in Strategic Quality Management.

I’m 56 so I initially questioned whether this course was going to make much difference to my career. But I have to say it’s been fascinating to go back to University and learn about the theory that underpins a lot of practical business decisions.” - John Holland, HP

“Knowledge has a really short shelf-life and you need to continually top-up your learning or you and your organisation will grind to a halt. If you surround yourself with creative minds it creates a buoyancy effect to move the whole organisation forward.” – Ray Dodd, HP

“I left school at 15 so was slightly nervous at the thought of studying again but the course has made me realise how much experience I already have and has allowed me to put into place the theory behind it. I have been taught so much that I can bring to my job.” – Caroline Deans, HP

“I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to be involved in such an innovative partnership which is so relevant to my role.” - Lindsay Hall, HP

Another example is with the NHS. In 2009 a consortia of NHS trusts, city councils, and voluntary providers across the south coast of UK worked with University of Portsmouth to design a masters programme for leaders in health and wellbeing services. NHS South Central and relevant divisions of councils and provider organisations, which have an annual budget of £2bn and employ over 100,000 staff, provided scholarships for potential directors of the future. A shared learning group for those involved along the whole pathway of patient experience cemented partnership working and raised confidence in commercial improvement.” A great opportunity to gain academic recognition for 20 years of NHS experience” Alison Howett, NHS Commissioner

My first year has been both daunting and exciting. It has developed my leadership skills, equipping me with the tools and knowledge not only to improve myself but also the service delivery of my team. Looking forward to my second year!”   Sharon Wemyss, Clinical manager, Solent Healthcare

“The programme has had significant influence on how I now approach the many different areas of my work” Carol Foley, NHS Service Lead
