Access to University of Portsmouth courses for EPC delegates
The University of Portsmouth has an agreement with the Emergency Planning College to accredit a range of short courses towards its undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. This document sets out the steps that students can take to register for, and gain credit towards, a degree programme.
The three postgraduate degrees are for students who already possess a good honours degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent professional experience and/or qualifications. The BSc in Risk and Security Management is for students who do not already have an honours degree.
Step 1
Using this chart (.pdf), identify which EPC courses you have attended and which units these map across to. For an MSc programme, you can count ANY 3 of the EPC courses marked with a cross in the column below the relevant unit. For the BSc programme, you can count ANY 2 of the EPC courses marked with a cross in the column below the relevant unit.
Example: You have completed the following three EPC courses: Introduction to Civil Protection; Introduction to Crowd and Public Safety Management; Introduction to Humanitarian Assistance in Emergencies. These can be accredited (subject to the steps below) against the Crisis Management and Governance unit that is offered on ALL three masters programmes. If you do not have a first degree, any two of these three EPC courses can be accredited against the Risk, Crisis & Disaster Management unit on the BSc Risk and Security Management degree.
Step 2
Read the information about the different degree programmes at the links below:
- MSc Crisis and Disaster Management
- MSc Security Management
- MSc Risk Management
- BSc (Hons) Risk and Security Management
Step 3
Apply to your chosen programme using the relevant online application forms at the link below:
- How to apply for Masters courses
- How to apply for undergraduate courses
Step 4
Your application will be processed and, subject to you satisfying the admissions requirements, you will be offered a place on the programme.
Step 5
You will be given access to the following resources:
- Information and Study Skills materials (at an advanced level for graduates returning to postgraduate education)
- An accredited prior learning (APL) pack for each of the units that you have mapped to in step 1, which includes:
- the learning outcomes of the unit
- a reading list
- an assessment question
The assessment will ask you demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes of the unit through the knowledge gained from attendance at the courses, your own professional knowledge and experience, and the reading that you have undertaken.
- The University Library, including all online books, journals and other electronic resources.
- A named personal tutor who will provide you with the support and guidance you need to complete your assessment.
Step 6
If you successfully complete the assessment to a pass standard, you will be awarded the relevant APL credit towards a University of Portsmouth award. You can then choose to take additional units towards a postgraduate diploma or to work towards the full master’s programme. You can claim a maximum of 60 credits (or two postgraduate units) towards a postgraduate diploma or a maximum of 90 credits (or three postgraduate units) towards a full master’s degree. If you do not already have a degree, you can gain up to 60 credits (or three undergraduate units) towards the bachelor’s degree.
Example: You have completed six EPC courses, which have been mapped against the two units on the MSc Risk Management. You have successfully completed the assessments to demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes of these units and you have been awarded 60 APL credits. You can now take another two 30 credit units and exit with a Postgraduate Diploma.
