Consultancy

The University has a long tradition of supplying specialist consultants to meet the specific needs of clients. Our consultants have been contracted to provide timely high quality advice in areas such as total quality management, environmental assessment, business development and product development. They have also been engaged as expert witnesses in legal areas. They are responsive to the needs of industry and will work to their deadlines.

Analysis, Testing and Evaluation Services

The University is a nationally recognised centre of excellence for material testing and values Rolls Royce, the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA), GEC Marconi and Glaxo Wellcome amongst its customers. A wide range of testing services are available based on the strengths of the full scientific and technological research resources and include an Impact and Stress Laboratory, radiator testing, noise measurement, RFI and EMC measurement plus material failure analysis and fatigue integrity assessment to name a few. If your particular requirements are not listed here then we should be delighted to discuss your specific needs, large of small.

Regional Centre for Manufacturing Industry (RCMI)

This DTI funded Centre of Excellence and is dedicated to assisting manufacturing and service companies improve their competitiveness. The Centre is the focal point of our programme to assist manufacturing companies achieve excellence. Recent completed work includes the rapid prototype modelling (LOM & SLA) of household containers, hydraulic test vehicles, electronics instrument panels and boat equipment. In each case, the services have reduced time to market engineering and costs, and have provided visualisation of products at an early stage.

In the area of Precision Measurement and Quality Systems, the RCMI has been awarded a UK Government Teaching Company Scheme (TCS) and is working in association with a local Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) to improve product specifications that will enable export market growth. Another TCS is in preparation in Mechatronics Design & Manufacture.

Centre for Enterprise Research and Innovation (CERI)

This new Centre within the Portsmouth Business School specialises in assisting businesses develop their procedures and working practices in areas such as Total Quality Management, Risk and Project Management and other Decision Support Systems. It aims to contribute to the local and national business community by helping companies to develop the core competencies needed to gain significant competitive analysis.

Evaluation, Mapping and Surveys

The Centre for Coastal Zone Management undertakes projects with particular reference to conflict resolution and resource allocation. The establishment of the Centre in the University is a logical extension of Portsmouth's maritime heritage, coastal location, proximity to Europe and the existing research expertise in coastal issues spread throughout the Institution. Notable among these interests is the internationally renowned Centre for the Economics and Management of Aquatic Resources (CEMARE).

Product Development and Licensing

The University has an extensive and continuing programme of development of systems, devices and products. These range currently from multi-limbed robotic devices using novel pneumatic systems controlled by digital networked technology for work in hazardous environments, software programmes for generic drug design to a mass production process for supporting sport fishing. By the nature of the Institution we are best at innovative research and development and actively seek collaborative partners for the commercial development of emerging technology or research into entrepreneurial ideas where this is beyond the means of the inventor. The resultant technology or process can then be licensed or assigned for further development or production.

Training and Professional Development

The University can design and deliver training courses across a wide range of disciplines and topics. We specialise in providing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and can tailor material to meet the specific in-house needs of individual customers. We already provide courses for many professional groups and these are being developed progressively for other countries that value British CPD qualifications. Whether you need the organisation and presentation of a customised conference, lectures, seminars or residential short courses, or perhaps the preparation and publication of purpose designed, flexible learning and training materials, we can help you. To support this there is a fully equipped TV studio, a production unit for multi-media products, training films and videos, an open learning centre and an educational development unit to advise on the best means of delivery.

We can also provide fast track executive language training in all European languages and many others together with translation and interpreting services. Does your promotional material have the same impact abroad or do you want to understand the detail of a foreign contract or the cultural differences of you potential customer; the Language Centre can provide all the answers.

Short Courses for Industry

There is a comprehensive programme of short courses covering a wide range of subjects from Microwave techniques and measurements, NEBOSH & IOSH and British Institute of Occupational Hygiene courses to management, business administration and personal development. Whenever possible these will include formal accreditation or if not a Certificate of attendance plus full supporting material will be provided. These courses are normally delivered in the University or at a suitable local conference venue, but can be provided at a client's site if there is sufficient demand. Some courses are also available by distance learning.

Customised Courses

If one of our standard courses does not meet your needs in full then we should still be able to help you. Drawing on the material from some 6000 first degree and postgraduate course units and the expertise of a large number of specialists, we can construct customised training to meet your specific needs. This process will, however, take a little while and there may be added costs depending on the volume of design and development work needed.

Awards

We are very conscious of the need of individuals to gain qualifications in furtherance of their professional status and careers. Where possible and depending on length, all courses and CPD programmes are accredited by or provide the necessary training for membership of/examination for professional institutes or external examination bodies. Additionally, some courses merit dual accreditation with credits towards 1st degree or postgraduate awards.
