REF 2014

star Overview

Purpose of REF

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the new peer review process for assessing the quality of research in UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that will be used to allocate HEFCE quality-related research (QR) funding from 2015-16. The results of REF2014 will replace the outcomes of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE08).

The REF will be undertaken by the four UK higher education funding bodies and will:

  • Inform the selective allocation of research funding to HEIs
  • Provide benchmarking information and establish reputational yardsticks
  • Provide accountability for public investment in research and demonstrate its benefits

Management of REF

Professor Tara Dean, Director of Research is leading the coordination of the University of Portsmouth’s submission for REF2014. Supported by Associate Deans of Research in each of our five colleagues and many other colleagues.
